They say I am successful. I have won awards fromall of the famous universities, and everyone I meetthinks I am some kind of genius. But I ask myself,'Am I really successful?' Medicine helps sick peopleget better, but what I'm interested in is people'scharacters. I believe that people have different sidesto their characters, but they are not allowed toshow them because of society. At the moment, I amworking on something which I hope will changethat. Then I will see how successful I am as a doctor.

There was a knock at the door.

"Who is it?"

"It's me, sir. I've brought you your evening tea."

Dr Jekyll stopped writing and opened the door forPoole. "Put it down over there and take those otherthings away. But I don't want to be disturbed againtonight, Poole."

"Yes, sir."

Poole put the tea tray on one of Dr Jekyll's tables.

Dr Jekyll was thinking deeply about something, andhe wasn't looking at Poole. When he looked up,Poole was about to put a half-empty glass, which hethought Dr Jekyll had finished with, onto an emptytray.

"Don't touch that!"

Dr Jekyll's shout frightened Poole so much that hedropped the tray. Jekyll ran over and took the glassaway from him. "Good grief, Poole. You don't knowwhat you almost did."

"I - I'm so sorry, sir. I only thought..."

"Never mind. Leave me alone now. You can clean upin the morning."

"Yes, sir."

When Poole left, Dr Jekyll stood holding the glass inhis hand. He smiled in an evil way and his eyes shonebrightly.

"This will show me if I am really successful or not.Now let's see what this medicine can do to a man'scharacter."

Dr Jekyll drank what was in the glass. He began tocough and hold his throat.

"Oh! What have I done?“

Jekyll threw off his white coat. He could not stand upand he began knocking bottles off his tables. Hegrabbed his hat and coat.

"I ... have to get out of here."

He left through a secret door behind a bookcase atthe back of the laboratory.
